Here’s a rarity with an interesting historical connection: a finely crafted navette shaped mahogany snuff box with an inlaid cartouche engraved with the early abolitionist symbol of a kneeling slave, based on Josiah Wedgwood’s design. English, c.1790. When I bought it years ago, the box came with an early (c.1840s) newspaper clipping inside commemorating a Mr. Clarkson, probably an obituary, and certainly referring to famed abolitionist Thomas Clarkson (see Wikipedia for more info). Was it his box? Or that of an admirer and adherent to the cause? Many of the leading English abolitionists from the 1780s on were Quakers, including Clarkson, and the less showy materials here employed suggest the owner may have been of that sect. In any event it’s unique in my experience and I believe truly something special. The craftsmanship is also as fine as one ever sees on a wooden box, clearly the work of a superb cabinetmaker/woodworker.

This lovely and historically resonant table snuff box measures 3 1/2” long, 2” wide, and just over 1” high. It is in pristine condition excepting a very discreet and stable hairline crack running from the lip at the lid’s end down the right side (see last photo). It retains its lovely and original surface with a soft and warm patina.
