RARE-English BOER WAR / TUG OF WAR Figural KNIFE REST-Reg 1882-Wm Hutton & Son:
$99.99

Up for offer is a very unusual English Victorian silverplate knife rest in the form of two men in a tug-of-war, apparently symbolizing the conflict between the English and Dutch settlers that led to the First Boer War in South Africa. The piece is 3 5/8 inches long by 1 ¼ inches wide and stands about 2 1/8 inches tall. It has a textured base and two figures, one which looks like a farmer and the other like a bellhop engaged in a tug of war. The piece is marked on the base with the “[WH][&][S][B][P]” mark of William Hutton & Sons and a registry diamond mark which dates the design to 1882. A highly unusual piece of Victorian silverplate!

Condition on the piece is good. There is some stubborn tarnish, possibly wear-through, but it is not too bad. There are some nicks around the base as well. A fun piece!
