Thisis an absolutely stunning work of art, a soup tureen in the shape ofa duck.

Thisshape of tureen is well known and it would be used to serve dishessuch as crab or duck soup. I have identified two other very similarduck form tureens with similar design, shape and also with thebeautiful Foo Dog head handles.

Theduck is facing backwards and has her beak resting in her back. Thehead is delightful, with the eyes moulded in relief and the beakslightly open. The wings are also wonderfully designed, moulded inrelief and with the feathers delicately painted. The tuft of the tailsection is raised high just like a real duck.

Thereis a lot of green colour in the patterns making this a Famille Vertepiece. There are some exquisite designs, floral patterns and paintingon the upper section of this tureen. The flowers are typical of thosefound on 19th century and earlier Chinese ceramics andthey are beautifully displayed around the sides of the top half ofthis tureen.

Thebottom section is painted with delightful waves including white foamsprays. These white shape foam spray can seen on the Qing Dynastytureen shown in the last image which sold for CAN$2920.

Thisremarkable antique Chinese tureen weighs 3kg so it would weigh a lotmore when full of soup making the handles essential to prevent itfrom slipping. The handles are hollow and you can see holes at eitherside of the mouth of the Dogs of Foo. These may be dragon heads andnot Dogs of Foo.

Onehas SOLD for CAN$2920 (£1,700) with similar coloursand similar designs with the masks at either end (shown in the finalimage above).

Anotheone of similar shape, size and design with masks at either end BUT ina somewhat muted palette of blue & white is availabe for US$2,500(£1850).

Thispiece is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, damage orrepairs. Each of the two sections makes a lovely ringing sound whencarefully flicked. Please note that the underside has some loss ofglaze due it\'s use over several decades. There is also some loss ofglaze where the two sections have rubbed together over the years.However this is insignificant and part of the history of thiswonderful Chinese antique.

Thisdelightful antique tureen measures approximately:

300mmLength x 220mm Height x 190mm Width.
