RARE ~ FOXY GRANDPA PLAYING BALL ~ Carl E. Schultze ~ Bunny ~ BASEBALL Comic:
$34.99

I\'m downsizing and selling a great lot of antique and vintage children\'s books I\'ve had in my (non-smoking and humidity-controlled) library for years. I\'ve decided to sell them individually (or in small groups), as many of these titles are rare and collectible. I love old children\'s books for the charm of the illustrations and oftentimes obscure stories which are long out-of-print.
This sale is for a soft-covered booklet, which seems to be classified as a PLATINUM AGE Comic:FOXY GRANDPAPLAYING BALL
\"The Boys Teach Him How to Play Baseball\"
ILLUSTRATED BY \"BUNNY\"
M.A. Donohue & Co., ChicagoNo. 860There are no other identifying characteristics.
The \'booklet\' is linen-like, measures 5 7/8\" x 8 1/2\" and runs 8 pages (counting the covers).
From what little information I can find online, this is quite a \'scarce\' and \'rare\' comic. From Wikipedia:
Carl E. Schultze\'sFoxy Grandpa(1904)

Foxy Grandpawas a newspapercomic stripfeaturing an eponymous character, created bycartoonistCarl E. Schultzedrawing under the name of “Bunny.”

Foxy Grandpamade its first appearance on January 7, 1900.[1]The strip initially ran in theNew York Herald, but it moved to theNew York Americanon February 16, 1902.[2]

This feature lasted through the 1920s and well into the 1930s. In 1929, the strip appeared in America\'s first comics periodical,The Funnies.[2]

Characters and story[edit]

The strip revolved around Foxy Grandpa, an elderly gentleman, with two mischievous grandsons (Chub and Bunt) who constantly try to trick him. Foxy Grandpa, however, always managed to get the better of the two boys, combining brains with a perverse sense of humor, while demonstrating skills at acrobatics, illustration and construction of various small devices.[2]

Cultural legacy[edit]
  • In the 1938 filmCrashing Hollywoodthe squirrelly Movie mogul Hugo Wells is called Foxy Frandpa.
  • In the 1944 filmMurder My SweetdetectivePhillip Marlowerefers to the villainous Jules Amthor as Foxy Grandpa.

This copy is in good condition with some handling wear, creases, and spots of soiling. The two staples have rusted. The one similar title on ABE lists 8 pages, but only 4 being in color. This copy has 8 pages (including the covers), and all of them are in color...and still vividly bright after 100+ years.
If you have any comments, I\'d be happy to add them to this sale and thank you in advance. I don\'t know how to price this \'comic\' as the one comparable isn\'t quite the same, having only half the pages in color, so I\'ll list with a starting price based on the other one and see how things go. Please see my other sales for more vintage and antique children\'s books to combine for shipping/handling. I will simply re-weigh the books together and adjust for your zip code via Media Mail. My shipping cost includes a new bubble-wrap mailer for individual books and/or bubblewrap for boxlots. I add insertion fees plus final-value fees to the cost of postage...then round it down so you actually pay less than what it costs me (not including PayPal fees). If I find there is any significant discrepancy in charges, I will refund the difference. Happy to answer any questions!
THANKS FOR LOOKING!
