EXTREMELY RARE FINE QUALITY GEORGIAN SEAL TOP SOLID SILVER PORTE CRAYON

Hallmarked ....Samuel Pemberton ....Birmingham circa 1800

This is Rare Georgian Seal Top Solid Silver Porte Crayon. This superb Georgian Porte Crayon is hallmarked for Samuel Pemberton and dates to circa 1800 making it nearly 220 years old. the design and decoration is beautiful so very elegant and timeless with a reeded body and banded slider to the bottom, this design is so typical of the Georgian period. What sets this Georgian Porte Crayon apart from many others it the wonderful Oval seal to the top which is mounted and set with a carnelian stone with solid silver scallop edging giving it such an elegant look and so very Georgian, this carries a family crest as you can see in the photos. This is very rare early Georgian Porte Crayon and to find one mounted with an Oval Carnelian Seal is very special. The quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Georgian Gentleman or Lady and been used daily in a time when letter writing was the only form of communication, they would have used the Porte Crayon to compose their letters and then folded the paper and sealed it with hot wax and using the family seal to the end of the porte crayon to secure it, this was many years ago when times were so very different. For those who do not know the porte crayon was the very earliest type of travelling pencil, it simply held either a piece of wad which was thick lead or a simple cedar pencil which just pushed into the ring inside the pencil. It is so very tactile and once picked up has the most wonderful feel, this will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice, i have found the small cedar pencil that was with this porte crayon so will add this when sending to the buyer. This is a very rare and special Georgian Solid Silver Carnelian Mounted Seal Top Porte Crayon, you will not find another like this on the market as its extremely rare.
