RARE! Hamilton 21 Jewel, 5 Adjustment, 36 Size chronometer \'Pocket Watch\' made for the US Navy during WW1. Only 970 of this watch were ever made, perhaps the rarest of the marine chronometers by Hamilton. Ultra high grade movement is in running condition and winds, runs, and sets properly. Not checked for timekeeping. The wind indicator portion of the dial appears to have a silver plate soldered over it. Why this was done I don\'t know. Perhaps this was done after the war to make the watch a civilian piece, perhaps a watchmaker didn\'t know how to service an up down, perhaps the parts for it are not there....It\'s not a watch that I\'m comfortable with taking apart to pull the dial off of.Overall it\'s an extremely rare piece. Silver dials can be easily refinished, and the added plate can be removed by a competent jeweler or maybe even a dial refinisher can remove it.This is the non gimbaled version of this watch, and as such it would have been one of the first 500 made of the 970. Movement is stem wind, and pin set. Silver case is original, and signed US Navy No 5172.It is interesting to note that NOT all of these came with a wind indicator.....Once again, sold AS IS. An ultimate rarity!
