This massive pewterrectangular dish of twenty-one inches in length comes from the historicalestate of the ‘Redmond of Ruffords Abbey’ in Yorkshire, England. This abbey was first built in 1148 and laterbecame the home of the Earls of Scarborough. It is now part of the NationalTrust. The front rim bears the initials ‘RR’ . The back of the charger bearscatalogue labels from a Sotheby’s sale in London. The back also bears themarks of the London Maker: Samuel Cocks, listed in Cotterell’s Old PewterIts Makers and Marks, mark #1004, circa 1820. It also bears a old pricelabel of $725. most probably from the 1960’s or early 70’. The back ‘booge area’ bears traces of oldpewter re-soldering. This is not unusualfor pewter items of this size and weight. A history of Rufford Abbey can befound via ‘Google’.
