Bruno von Würzburg (about 1005-1045,

also Bruno of Carinthia, from 1027 - 1034 1034 chancellor for Italy and from 1034 Bishop of Würzburg. Son of Duke Conrad I of Carinthia and cousin of the Salier Emperor Conrad II. He was commissioned by Henry III. to Agnes de Poitou and accompanied him on his Hungarian campaign.

CONTENT / DESCRIPTION
Very important and rare very well preserved Psalter edited by the Bishop Bruno of Würzburg. With the Cantica, Pater noster, Symbolum apostolicum (Credo), Tedeum and Symbolum Athanasianum. In second edition with the comments by Bruno, Bishop of Würzburg.

On the last blank leaf and inside the back binding some contemporary paintings and marginals;
two designs with coat-of-arms with crown and two gothic churches with text and number tables. The calendar with the years from 1502-1524.

LAYOUT
Magnificent print in different types and layouts. The introduction in double column, gothic type with 44 lines and headline. The mainly part of the Psalter in single column, gothic type with text around (Interlinearglosses) with 28 and 54 lines with headline. Rubricated in yellow and red. Some handpainted small and large initials in red and blue. Size of the leaves: 23 x 17 cm; Layout: 17 x 12 cm.

COLLATION
174 nn. leaves, the last leaf blank. Complete absolutely.

BINDING
Original late gothic binding. Darkbrown calf leather over massive wooden boards. Richly blindstamped ornaments with rectangular and diagonal lines. In the center with stamps of flowers, thistle and fool cap, flower tendrils around. The back cover with flowers and thistles too. Without clasps. 3 bounds. In good condition. Binding partly rubbed and slightly scratched. Bookblock strong and stable. Spine old restored. Measurements: 23 x 17 x 4 cm.

CONDITION
In very good condition. Clean and well preserved Incunable. Leaves continuous slightly brownish, in the margin partly minimal finger- and brownstained. In the beginning in the upper margin slightly waterstained. Strong print and strong handmade paper. Title stronger dusty and damages in the margin. Few contemporary handwritten marginals and comments in brown ink, partly with the famous hands.

Owners stamp „Ad Bibl(iotheca). Colleg(ium). B(eatae). V(irginis). Auxil(iaris?). M B H” on the title, around 1750. Probably Bohemian collegium of Jesuits.

Bruno von Würzburg (um 1005-1045,

auch Bruno von Kärnten genannt, war von 1027 bis 1034 Kanzler für Italien und ab 1034 Bischof von Würzburg. Sohn des Herzogs Konrad I. von Kärnten und Vetter des Salierkaisers Konrad II.. Er warb im Auftrag Heinrichs III. um Agnes von Poitou und begleitete ihn auf seinem Ungarnfeldzug.

Bedeutender, im Handel seltenes, vollständiges und bestens erhaltener Psalter, editiert von Bruno Bischof von Würzburg. Enthalten sind Cantica, Pater noster, Symbolum apostolicum (Credo), Tedeum und Symbolum Athanasianum. Vorliegend die zweite Ausgabe mit dem Kommentar von Bruno, Bischof von Würzburg.

Auf den letzten weißen Blatt sowie hinterem Spiegel einige zeitgenössische Zeichnungen und Handschriften, u.a. zwei Wappenentwürfe mit Krone und zwei gotischen Kirchen sowie Text- und Zahlentabellen. Der darin enthaltene Kalender reicht von 1502-1524.

EINBAND
Originaler spätgotischer Einband der Zeit. Braunschwarzes Kalbsleder über massiven Holzdeckeln. Reichhaltige Blindprägungen: Rechteckig und diagonal dreifach verlaufende Streicheisenlinien. Im Mittelkasten Prägestempel große und kleine Blüte, Distel und Narrenkappe. Mittelkasten zweifach umrandet mit Blumenranke mit Blüte. Rücken ebenso mit Disteln und Blüten geprägt. Schließen entfernt. Gebunden auf drei echten Bünden. Guter Zustand. Buchblock fest und stabil. Deckel berieben und bekratzt. Rücken alt und kaum sichtbar restauriert. Quartformat: 23 x 17 x 4 cm.

ZUSTAND
Sehr guter Zustand. Sauberes und ordentliches Exemplar. Gleichmäßig nur leicht gebräunt und vereinzelt in den Rändern finger- oder braunfleckig. Vorstücke oben um Rand schwach wasserrrandig. Kräftiger, fühlbarer Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Titelblatt stärker angestaubt und mit Randläsuren. Einige zeitgenössische, handschriftliche Textergänzungen in sauberer Bastarda sowie Randkommentare in brauner Tinte sowie Hände.

PROVENIENZ
Christian Closner - Handschriftlicher Besitzereintrag “Exlibris Christiani Closner AD 1638.“

Besitzerstempel „Ad Bibl(iotheca). Colleg(ium). B(eatae). V(irginis). Auxil(iaris?). M B H” auf dem Titel um 1750. Möglicherweise Böhmisches Jesuitencollegium.
