Sgawara Michizane, posthumous nameTenjin (born845,Japan—diedMarch 26, 903,Dazaifu, Japan),Japanese political figure and scholar ofChinese literatureof the Heian period, who was later deified as Tenjin, the patron of scholarship andliterature.

Sugawara was born into a family of scholars, and as a boy he began studying the Chinese classics. After passing the civil-service examination in 870 he entered the Japanese court as a scholar and poet. In 886 he was appointed governor of Sanuki Province (modern Kagawa prefecture) on the island of Shikoku. However, he was exiled to Kyūshū as the result of a conspiracy of the Fujiwara family. After his death in exile there were several disasters in the capital of Kyoto which people believed were caused by his angry spirit. He was therefore reinstated and raised to the rank of a Shintō deity (renamed Karai Tenjin) and the Kitano Shrine was founded in his memory. The Imperial court posthumously restored his title and office, and struck from the record any mention of his exile. Even this was not enough, and 70 years later Sugawara was deified asTenjin-sama, orkamiof scholarship. Today many Shinto shrines in Japan are dedicated to him.
