You are offerding on the LARGE beautiful and remarkable antique dagger and scabbard as shown in the images above. This dagger is an exceptional example of Mughal art. The photographs do not capture the deep, rich colour and intricate detail on this wonderful work of art!

Firstly, the handle is made of a large single piece of horn and is a wonderful spinach green colour. Horn is a delicate material and difficult to work as it can be brittle. The handle is carved in such as way that the person holding it has a solid grip on it. Observe the way that the skilled craftsman who made this dagger has carved a ring like section part way up the handle – your fingers slip around this section providing a non-slip grip on an otherwise smooth handle. You need to remember that a dagger would often be used in the heat of a battle in close combat so you would need a strong grip with all that sweat and blood!

Secondly, the scabbard itself is a work of art! It has wonderful, intricately designed sections of inlaid silver on the steel. The designs are typical of the period 1700-1850 and the silver is in very bright condition. And if you needed any further evidence that this piece is a remarkable work of art: just look at the finishing touch at the tip of the scabbard!

Thirdly, the textile or cloth section in the centre of the scabbard is rare and only found on the best daggers. The textile section has wonderful bright colours that are typical of Persian rugs of the period. The colours are based on vegetable dyes as opposed to modern, artificial chemical dyes which were invented in the 1860s. What would the purpose be of having a textile section on the scabbard? Again, in the sweat and blood of battle, when your hand settles on this section of the scabbard – you get an excellent grip in order to unsheathe the dagger.

Fourthly, we now come to the dagger itself and what a blade it is! The gold inlay is beautiful and intricate on BOTH sides of the blade! The blade itself is sharpened on both sides and the steel has a wonderful texture to it known as a “watered blade” or “wootz”.

This amazing dagger complete with it’s original scabbard is in remarkable condition. The horn handle has a blemish on the back of the handle appears to be a small split and would be easily repaired but is part of the history of the piece. It is a minor blemish and does not detract from the overall desirability and excellent condition of the dagger. The textile section is in wonderful, bright condition but could do with a slight clean. The silver inlay has some minor wear but is mostly present and in very good condition. The gold inlay is in excellent as it has been protected in the original scabbard. The scabbard also retains it’s original rings/loops to attach the dagger to a belt.

This is a very rare and wonderful example of Indo Persian art and it is complete and in excellent condition.
