RARE Leaf 1483 Incunabula Latin Bible MULTI-COLORED Initials + Jerome\'s Prologue:
$150.00

First of all, I must say that this leaf is the most beautiful, colorful, and ornate in my entire collection--and it was printed in 1483. This leaf ofthe 1483 Latin Bible has an amazing multi-colored initial letter, consisting of an ornate pink A, with a green border, as well as a\"metallic\" gold ink on the right side and the top left corner, and this was done byhand in the 1480s by the rubricator (see the 1st scanned image). It isabsolutely beautiful!A very large leaf from a Latin Vulgate Bible published in Venice in 1483 by theprinter, Johannes Herbort. It is outstanding edition of the LatinBible, one of the Fontiubus ex Graecis editions, \"a series of correctedLatin Bibles, which claim for themselves--apparently with justice--asuperiority above all contemporary edition,\" according to Darlow andMoule, vol. II, p. 911. This is just twenty-eight years after Gutenberg\'s1st Bible of 1455! By definition, an incunabulum (the singular of\"incunabula\") or \"incunable\" (French) or\"inkunabel\" (German) must be printed from 1455 to1500.However, those books printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s,as well as the year 1500 (which is technically the last year of the 15thcentury), had more and more woodcut printed initials. In Latin, the term\"incunabula\" means \"baby clothes\" or \"things of thecradle,\" and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in thedevelopment of anything. This leaf has rubrication doneall by a scribe\'s own hand in red ink, and there are scores of marks, underlinings, and flourishes on this leaf. The colors are strong andfresh-looking, on both sides of the leaf. Size of thesheet is about8 in. x11 in. This leaf contains the text of the Dueteronomy, chapters 33-34, and Joshua, chapters 1-2. It is important to point out that this leaf also has St. Jerome\'s Prologue to the Book of Joshua. This sheet hasfive (5) large handwritten initial letters, with one of them being themulti-colored one described above (see the 1st scannedimage). This sheet is truly an amazing leaf of the 1483 Latin Bible! In fact, it is like a workof art, with the printed Biblical page done with black printer\'s ink, and thenadded to this is the rubricator\'s artistic additions in red ink, blue ink, andyellow ink. Also, there are not just red marks for beginning ofsentences, but also yellow ink used to shade these red letters. We need to put into context the work of Christian scribes during the last 2,000years. During these centuries scribes developed two kinds ofabbreviations in the manuscripts that were copied and re-copied. Thefirst kind of abbreviation was the shortening or abbreviation of very commonwords, so that it was easier and quicker to write such words. These donot concern us here. The second kind of abbreviation was for the wordsheld sacred by Christians. In the Latin tradition, and especially inJerome\'s Latin Vulgate text, these were called \"Nomina Sacra\" meaning\"Holy Names.\" The common example of Nomina Sacra are Lord, God,Jesus, Christ, Holy Spirit, the Father, and the Son. This leaf has theNomina Sacra or Holy Name for the word\"LORD\" as it is given in the King James Version. Itappears in the abbreviated form \"dns\" or \"dni\" (witha long line above the \"n\" to indicate the sacred abbreviation). This leaf has an amazing twenty-four (24) instancesof this sacred abbreviation, in the form of \"dns\" for the word \"Lord\" (see the last two scanned images. It also has one (1) instance of the abbreviation for \"Christ\" as \"xpi.\" The winner will receive the original 1483 Latin Bible leaf, as well as axerox copy with all these things marked, which annotations were made by someonewho has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from the University of Birmingham, in Birmingham, England.Bibliographic description in Frederick R. Goff, \"Incunabula in AmericanLibraries,\" as # B579. The sheet of paper is in good condition, but doesshow some light browning discoloration, especially around the edges, dueto its age and use over the centuries. Also, there are littleworm holes, that are almost beautiful when held up to the light! Animpressive early incunabula leaf. This is anoriginal15th century printed Bible page, not a reproduction. It authenticity is100% guaranteed.
