About Calabashes ‘Umeke Pakaka (Art and Crafts of Hawaii by Sir Peter H. Buck):"Low wide bowls termed pakaka were the largest made, their diameter far exceeding their height. With wood the craftsmen were able to control details of shape. Thus some variage was made in the curve at which the part of the bowl above its greatest diameter was turned in towards the rim.Though it has been stated that the round bowls were used for poi, the large pakaka bowls were also used for large servings of other foods such as pork and large fish. The food was cut into smaller portions in the bowl to form convenient individual servings"
