Brutalism was originally a term coined to describe architecture in 1949.
It was raw and unfinished. It was, generally, not designed to be attractive or pleasing
but was meant to convey a sense of awe. It was imposing. Impossible to ignore. It took almost a decade before brutalism appeared in mainstream
furnishing designs. Whereas in architecture, it was often
utilized in structures for the masses, such as public buildings
or urban housing, in furnishings it was for the elite.
Brutalism in architecture was highly criticized. By the time
lamp designers started to embrace it, it was already only accepted
by the most educated - and so brutalist art became something
found only in the penthouses of the crème de la crème of society.
The furnishings that featured brutalism were stratified and expensive
and were scorned as elitist and an affront to convention. This lamp is an early example of brutalism and precedes the
designs that were mass produced later by companies such as Laurel.
This is a one of a kind hand wrought lamp and is truly more art
than furnishing. Raw copper is bent, turned and twisted to create a form
that can support a socket and shade. Conventional tastes
would declare it unattractive - possibly even ugly. But for those
who are educated and have an appreciation of art history,
this lamp is one of the rare jewels of early brutalist expressionism.A single pull string socket illuminates a hand painted fiberglass
shade that is conical in shape. The electrics are all original
and work fine. The lamp is extremely well preserved.A priceless, one of a kind addition to your collection of modern art
furnishings - and a great piece of functional art for your Hong Kong
penthouse, Case Study Home, Mediterranean Villa or Palm Beach mansion.
