Apothecary or Pharmacy jars and jugs are very collectable. You don\'t find them often on the antiques markets because they often remain for years in the same families as a kind of heirlooms. In Western Europe important collections are still in the possesion of the same apothecary shops. Some musea are the lucky owners of complete ancient pharmacies.

Concerning this particular pot: we are not certain of its age though we think we can date it around 1800. We also could not find the story which is told by the decoration. It must be a kind of myth or fabel. The region of Savona might be responsible for the origin of the pot.

a - Description:

Two handled jar with a tapering spout. Decorated in the berretino technique.

b - Design:

This can be called an Istoriato jug, because it tells you a wonderful and interesting story, though we could not find the meaning of the decoration. The seahorse handles bear witness of the close connection of the potters with the Mediterranean sea and its harbors. The painting shows its connection with and admiration for the Roman times.

c - Origin:

Northern Italy, Savona or an other city in the region.

d - Year of production:

Early nineteenth century, to be on the safe side. We are no experts on Italian ceramics and know how difficult it is to be certain.

e - Material and Technique:

Soft pottery, glazed and painted in blue after the drawing was scetched in manganese. The technique of the use of a bluish glaze font is called by professionals as Berretino.

f - Dimensions and Weight: (All approx.)

Height: 22.5 cm. = 8.86 inches.

Weight: 1300 gr.

g - Identification:

Similar apothecary jars can be found in literature and also on the internet.

h - Condition:

Wonderful condition and without restorations. There is the normal wear, but no real chips or any cracks.
