RARE North Carolina Geological/Economic Survey Vol. II Fishes 24 Color Plates:
$19.99

This is a really rare book--Volume II of the series of treatises on North Carolina\'s geology and wildlife/ecology published in 1907 by the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey. The author is Hugh M. Smith, and it was printed in Raleigh by the Edwards & Broughton Printing Co., State Printers. It is fairly large, measuring 10\" in height and 7\" in width, and it is HEAVY, printed on fine paper and weighing nearly 4 pounds, with cloth covers. From the inscription inside, it apparently once belonged to someone named H. C. Lay, who was a professor or a student at the University of North Carolina. All the pages are intact and the cloth cover is in pretty good condition for its age, with gold stamping of the front and spine. The spine is tight. It is a beautiful book, with predictable page and edge yellowing, but with lots of wonderful line drawings of fishes and 17 color plates which are so nice they could each be framed. Please check out the pictures for the condition, which I\'ve tried to accurately portray since I am not a book dealer and can\'t really accurately grade this as they do.
I can\'t find another one online right now, and one of the other volumes recently sold on for $49.50. Modern companies have photographed this book and are selling reprints both in paperback and digitally, but there is something so beautiful about this book that I think it is a great item. I wish I hadn\'t needed to take so many pictures that showed the condition so I could have shown more of the beautiful plates and drawings. I guarantee that you will find the pages inside this book very interesting and pretty, and that it is valuable even if all you do is remove the plates (hate to think about it, but they would be lovely as a grouping on the wall.) But that\'s for the buyer to choose.
I am also listing another volume in this series, Volume IV from 1919, which is in a poorer condition, unfortunately, due to its cover being taped. It deals with North Carolina\'s birds, so if you want to get more of these rare volumes, it is available and I can combine shipping. I plan to ship media mail unless the buyer asks me to upgrade to priority mail.
