This wonderful old oil painting depicts a genre tavern scene. It looks to be Netherlandish. Estimated between $1500 - $2000. It appears to be from possibly the late 17th century or the early 18th century. Genre painting is the depiction of everyday life. It flourished in the newly formed Dutch United Provinces, it\'s popularity closely linked with the creation of a national identity. Some artists paintings of the era show the preparation of food, eating and drinking, and the enjoyment of music in interior scenes. Isaac and Adriaen van Ostade focused on depictions of the tavern and peasant cottage. Pieter de Hooch and Vermeer are master artists of genre scenes. Artists who used the rough style painted very quickly and often did not make sketches before beginning a finished painting. Frans Hals painted in the rough style. The painting is not signed. The painting is in good condition for it\'s age. Measuring: 11\" by 9\" on a shaped octagonal wooden board. Estimated between $1500.00 and $2000.00.
