Thisis a beautiful and rare work of art from the Persian Empire withsilver inlay and wonderful Kufic inscriptions.

Thispiece was made in the Eastern Persian Empire (Khorassan Province whichincluded Herat & Ghazni. Khorasan was the centre of the Islamicmetal working for several centuries.

Itis remarkably similar to one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art(METMA):

TheMETMA example has piercing on the \'thigh\' area which is exactly thesame, also the way that the nose is raised high almost flat along theridge is very similar. Although the METMA example is fragmentary andhas lost a leg, tail and part of the underside, there are also othernoticeable similarities such as the hoove like feet, pointed ears,the large eyes and bulbous \'rump\'.

Youmay notice that the METMA example has precisely the same piercing onthe thighs as the one I am selling.

If you look closely at the centre of the piercing on the thighs (image 6), you can see a four-part section that is precisely the same at on the METMA example. You may have also noticed thatthe METMA example is a very small 17.14cm tall which makes me believethat it may have been a model or sample piece.

Thetail is hollow and the terminal is pierced with holes to allow theincense to waft out. There is a small opening in the chest whichleads to an integral cup to hold the incense or coal.

Wonderful deep patina and no damage or repairs - in excellent condition.

Thispiece measures around 33cm end to end and stands 32cm tall.

Itis very heavy at just over 3kg.

Thesebeautifil and early examples of Persian Islamic metal work come inmany different variations as can been seen with the following.
