RARE ELEGANT ART DECO SOLID STERLING SILVER CIGARETTE BOX - HALLMARKEDLDNDON 1938 -MASONICINTEREST - DEVON & CORNWALL

This is an elegant piece of solid English sterling silver in the form of a cigarette box with an interesting presentation inscription. It is most elegant in its simplicity, the silver body being of a polished mirror finish. It ishallmarked for during the Art Deco era, London 1938. There is a silver strip on the front for opening and the base has a black leatherette insert surrounded by silver. The silveron the base carries the name of themaker, jewelers Page, Keen& Page of Plymouth. Internally, the box is lined with cedar wood.

The inscription on the lid of the box reads: “A.O.F. THE H.C.R. BRO. E. SPAFFORDFROM DEVON & CORNWALLMARCH1939” So it was presented just six months before the outbreak of theSecond World War in September 1939.

The box is in verygoodcondition, especially considering its age of nearly 80 years old – please see the photos and details below. It could easily be used, for example, as a jewellery/trinket boxor to hold pens and pencils and would make an unusual gift for you to give.

HALLMARKS: There are two sets of hallmarks externally. The main set is on the lefthand side of the box. They are: the letters “P K & P” into a shield for Page, Keen & Page;the lion passant for solid English sterling silver; the Leopard\'s Head for the London Assay Office; the letter “C” for the year 1938. On the lid of the box, just above the main set of hallmarks, there is a further mark of the lion passant and the Leopard\'s Headto show that lid and body are the originals and matching. The silver on the base is marked with the maker\'s name, jewelers, \"PAGE, KEEN & PAGE PLYMOUTH\".

APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS/WEIGHT: It measures 12cm in width; 9cm in length and 3cm in height (lid only - 1.2cm). This is a fairly heavy box for its size and it weighs 320g.

CONDITION: As noted above, it is in very good condition, especially considering its age of nearly 80 years old. There are the usual light surface marks common to silver, as it is a very soft metal, and light scratches - as you would expect from a piece of silver of this age. We cannot see any splits or signs of repair. The hinge is in good order and itopens and closes fine. The cedar wood lining is in lovely condition, very clean, with its original divider still in place. The leatherette on the base is completely intact and also in good condition.

This is an elegant, fairly heavy, solid sterling silver cigarette box with an interesting inscription from the Art Deco era, hallmarked for London1938. The interesting inscription alone, from March1939, justsix months beforethe outbreak of the Second World War, makes it a collectable piece and a great slice of history.
