Condition

The book is in good condition. The lettering on the spine is bright and unrubbed. There is some light wear to the outside boards. There is a signature in the front and no bookplates or markings of any other kind. This book contains all 8 of Rackham\'s original color illustrations, with none missing, removed, or loose. A few pages have some light foxing, but most of the book is clean. Top edge Gilt. This is the First American edition printed by David McKay in 1928. A rare find with many beautiful illustrations.

Synopsis

\"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\" is a short story by Washington Irving set circa 1790 in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham \"Brom Bones\" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during the American Revolutionary War, and who \"rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head\". Ichabod mysteriously disappears from town, leaving Katrina to marry Brom Bones, who was \"to look exceedingly knowing whenever the story of Ichabod was related\".

Washington Irving (1783–1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He achieved international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon,Gent. in 1819, which included the short stories \"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\" and \"Rip Van Winkle\". He continued to publish regularly—and almost always successfully—throughout his life, and completed a five-volume biography of George Washington just eight months before his death, at age 76. Irving, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Francis Jeffrey, and Charles Dickens. As America\'s first genuine internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession.

Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939) was a prolific English book illustrator. He was born in London as one of 12 children. At the age of 18, he worked as a clerk at the Westminster Fire Office and began studying at the Lambeth School of Art. In 1892, he quit his job and started working for The Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. His works were included in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Louvre in Paris in 1914. While he may be best known for his elaborate illustrations of children\'s literature and fairy tales, he also illustrated books for adult readers, including A Midsummer Night\'s Dream (1908) and Undine.
