For your consideration, a rarethermometer in the Abalone pattern by Tiffany Studios New York; an example ofwhich is pictured in an original Tiffany brochure, circa 1915, on page 114 ofHolland’s Tiffany Desk Sets. Onpage 107 of the same book, the Abalone thermometer is given a rarity rating offour, meaning a collector could search for years before finding a singleexample. This fact, along with the remarkable condition and craftsmanship ofthis particular example, make it a must-have addition to any collection of Abalone,or Tiffany Studios rarities. Grounded in a desirable twilit gild,this thermometer seems to glow in any light due to its lovely patina and thedeeply incised line work for which the pattern is known. Four well-matched clustersof the pattern’s namesake round abalone shells bedeck the face with a smallercluster in each top corner and larger groupings at the base, all meant torepresent grape boughs that perfectly tie together the Art Nouveau nature ofTiffany’s work with the Art Deco stylings of the surrounding torsades. While temperaturesranging from -20 degrees Fahrenheit up to 120 degrees are numerated to the leftof the liquid tube, four practical measurements are noted to the right: blood Heat, Sum’r Heat, Temperate,and Freezing. The thermometer is supportedby a matching brace, secured to the face with sturdy hardware that allows it toextend gracefully while sitting flush. On the back panel, the thermometer isproperly stamped “TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1167”.
