Vintage RARE Golden Metal KEWPIE Salt and Pepper Shakers, made in Japan sometime in the late 1920\'s or early 1930\'s, as the Kewpie craze created by Rose O\'Neill swept the U.S.A. Cute and appealing, made of hollow cast metal.
The kewpies are very similar, but not identical, suggesting that the molded metal was hand finished after casting. The antique matte gold finish appears to be original to the pieces, but there are a few small areas that are slightly discolored to more coppery tone.
The originalmetalbases have cork stoppers attached with what look like wire staples that are possibly cast or soldered to the bases. One of the corks has a few turns of transparent tape (recent) to keep the fit snug. The bases are marked \"MADE IN JAPAN\".
Not sure what these are made of. The metal beneath the gold finish (and visible inside the castings) is silver colored, non magnetic, and too heavy for white metal or spelter. They were not stored with salt inside, so there are no telltale corrosion spots.
Very mysterious - there are no traces of similar cast metal Kewpie salt and pepper shakers to be found anywhere on the web, or in the usual reference sources.
About 3 1/2\" tall and 2\" wide.
Overall good to very good condition. Generally uniform matte antique gold finish, with a few spots of brighter gold or coppery color. The shaker on the right in the pictures has CRACKS ON EITHER SIDE, one about 1/4\" long, and the other is about 5/8\" long and curved. The cracks are visible but not terriblynoticeable, as can be seen in the photos. Not sure what might have caused them. The other shaker has no cracks. Both shakers have a few small nicks and chips in the finish, showing the silver colored metal underneath. Most of the shaker holes are blocked on both.
These are clearly hard to find, probably rare, and possibly UNIQUE - perfect for your collection.
