Wm. B. Kerr &Co., established in Newark, NJ in 1855, was one of the most prominentof master American silversmiths, and this amazing piece bearstestament to that fact.

This is afigural portrait depicting Lady Liberty interpreted from the Morgansilver dollar, the perfect epitome of the iconic Art Nouveau maiden,made circa 1900.

The piece hasbeen converted from a brooch and made into a fur clip. Its largersize makes it more rare and desirable than the smaller watch pin(Kerr style #1352) of the same design.

The hollowware construction of the original brooch (where two sheets of solidsterling silver were soldered together and the rough edges finishedoff and smoothed down) has been duplicated in the conversion. Thenew reinforcing sterling backing covers the original backing, therebyconcealing the Kerr plaquette which would have contained the stylenumber and Kerr\'s axe/hatchet trademark, but this is a known andregistered Kerr design.

The conversionis an extremely clean job and obviously done by a talented andprofessional jeweler. It has even been conjectured that the Kerrcompany accepted commissions to re-make their products as the tastesor requirements of their clients changed with the times.

The brooch isdone in a high relief repoussé and the sculptural quality of LadyLiberty\'s face is truly astounding. Her features are so sharplydefined that her face fairly pops out of the background. Simply breathtaking.

The clip is inabsolutely mint condition. There is not a single scratch, ding,pinhead dot, push-in, smoothing down, or any loss of definitionwhatsoever, even on the high points of the design such as the nose orchin, which are normally susceptible to flattening. Whatever blackmarks the camera might have picked up, or whatever appear to bedents, they are not there in real life.

As mycustomers know, I don\'t throw the word “mint” around loosely, butthis brooch is in such a perfect state that it could have been madeyesterday.

The clip hasdeveloped that delicious warm patina that only comes with the passingof many decades, but it has a lovely, soft gleam from handling.
