Up for sale is original preparatory artwork for a stained glass window (known as a cartoon) by the famous artist Valentine D’Ogries! This was made by D’Ogries ca. 1910, as can be seen by the text in the bottom section of the window which reads“TO THE HAPPY MEMORY OF ELIZABETH THOMPSON SPRING AD MDCCCXL - MDCCCX” (1840 - 1910).

Valentine d’Ogries’stained glass windows, frescoes, murals, and altar pieces grace many of the most beautiful churches in America! Some of his notable pieces are his Crucifixion, painted on wood, which hangs from the ceiling of St. George’s Church in Chicago; the frescoes and murals in the Hatfield Chapel in New Canaan, Connecticut; the staned glass windows of Trenton’s Trinity Cathedral; and sixteen 24-food windows for the church of St. Thomas the Apostle in Chicago, which took seven years to completeHe came to the United States from Austria and studied under George Sotter at Carnegie Tech\'s School of Fine Arts. In 1925 Mr. d\'Ogries set up his own stained glass studio in Carversville. He remained in the New Hope area for the rest of his life.

This stunning piece for sale here was hand drawn and painted by d’Ogries and is signed in pencil on the reverse. It depicts biblical scenes and provides a fascinating look at the artist\'s technique for designing his incredible stained glass windows! Upon close inspection you can see where pieces were pasted onto the backing paper (some have begun to peel up), pencil notations and original sketch lines. It measures over 6½ feet long!! It has been stored rolled, and due to its age there is some cracking, creasing, small tears and general wear.
