Roy G. Krenkel - "scythian Riders" - Original Pen Illustration Artwork (1970s) For Sale
Scythian Riders - an original Drawing by Roy G. Krenkel (executed circa mid
1970s) Ballpoint pen on an 8.5 x 11 inch thin piece of paper with a slightly smaller image.Around the fifth century BC the Greek historian
Herodotus observed the Scythians warriors in the region of the Black Sea and
wrote about them. These warriors, the spiritual ancestors of the Cossacks were a
rugged and hearty people who migrated over the years from their original home in
Central Asia to the grassy uplands north of the Black Sea an area now referred
to as the Ukraine.
Scythian Riders is a superb example of Roy Krenkel's later work. He has
captured these barbarian horseman here with superb feeling and artistry and the
sense of mis en scene is peerless. Drawings like this one are the bi product of
a lifetime of work in the field of sword and sorcery illustration by one of its
all time greatest practitioners. Look at the way with the simplest of means he
has conveyed a feeling of rugged terrain, of wind and air and suppressed power.
The warrior in the foreground carries his spear aloft with great dignity and a
sense of pervading stillness that underscores the need here for concentration
while the riders in the background are just mounting the hillock and still in
motion. The main warrior holds the whole band together both by his placement at
the apex of the composition and by the great dignity given to him by the artist
in his rendering of even the smallest details of his battle gear. His horse
(only a pony actually) gives us the forward direction of the wind by the way his
sparse mane has been ruffled. The magic of this drawing is the magic that
pervades all great illustrations and is prevalent in all Krenkel's best work, a
feeling that the artist was actually there to record this scene and has in a
sense brought us there as well. No higher compliment can be given to works of
narrative art. This drawing comes from the archives of the RGK Estate, from
the artist's collection of his own work and has never been offered for sale
before. In future we shall be putting up, some books and art from RGK's personal
archives. Coming down the line soon will be special copies for sale of
Swordsmen and Saurians and Sowers of the Thunder,
drawings by Angelo Torres and Al Williamson and by Frank Frazetta. Keep tuned to
