Iguanodon - An Original Watercolor by Roy G. Krenkel Watercolor on a 14 x 10 inch paper with slightly smaller image, initialed.
This original ink and watercolor drawing by noted fantasy illustrator Roy G. Krenkel was executed in the early 1970s. Krenkel produced numerous illustrations depicting dinosaurs and various prehistoric mammals many of them reproduced in his magnum opus Swordsmen and Saurians published by by Epic Books 25 years ago and now long out of print. This is a superb example of this aspect of Krenkel\'s work and would be a superb asset to any collection of illustrations of prehisoric animals. Roy it should be mentioned was a huge fan of the work of the Czech illustrator Zdenek Burian whose books depicting prehistoric flora and fauna are legendary. Frazetta was alsa an ardent admirer of Burian\'s work and the Czech artist strongly influenced Frank\'s own work when depicting dinosaurs and cavemen. One has only to look closely at Frank\'s famous painting of a tribe of Neanderthals marching toward the viewer to see Burian\'s influence written all over it. Burian and Krenkel kept up a lengthy correspondence over the years unlike Roy\'s other idol Norman Lindsay and both had great respect for each othe\'rs work as is evident in their exchange of letters. Zdenek owned a number of Krenkel drawings of dinosaurs and sent Roy several of his own. Watercolors of the quality of this one by RGK do not turn up for sale very often and this illustration has never been offered for sale before. It comes from the artist\'s collection of his own work and is being saleed by his estate.
