Mammoths on the Taiga is a great prehistoric animal drawing powerful in its arrangement of forms and overall concept. It has been initialed by the artist on the bottom right. It is part of the Roy G. Krenkel Legacy Collection a selection of drawings put aside by the artist and marked not to be sold (in his lifetime). These will be sent on request only.
As anyone who is an avid fan of the heroic fantasy genre and especially fans of the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, Roy G. Krenkel\'s work casts a large shadow. More than any other illustrator working during modern times with the exception of Frank Frazetta, Roy\'s work has influenced the broadest spectrum of practitioners of the genre especially those working in the medium of black and white. His magnificent drawings of Tarzan, Conan, John Carter of Mars, etc. have entered the popular culture and his recreations of prehistoric life are well known the world over and were admired by the legendary illustrator Zdenek Burian with whom Roy maintained an active correspondence. (the two traded works from time to time ), as well as such contemporary illustrators as Bill Stout and, James Gurney. As to the quality of Roy\'s overall contributions as an artist and illustrator the famed comic book artist Al Williamson put it best when he said to me years ago \"I\'ve always liked Frazetta\'s work but I\'ve never loved it the way I love the work of Roy Krenkel. Liking and admiring is one thing and when I see a Frazetta drawing or painting I can envy his great control of his various media be it oil or pen and ink and his theatrical talents and say to myself that\'s a problem well solved in that particular work. But love is something else. Roy knew the heroic fantasy genre inside and out having read all the major works or most of the more famous ones in the genre and could imbue his drawings with the kind of love he felt for the literature and it transmits itself powerfully to the observer. It is a love and an understanding that goes beyond Frank\'s contributions in which the latter superimposed himself on the material having read little. His work is still valid and merits when he succeeds as with the Conan paintings the highest praise but I won\'t call my admiration for Frank\'s work love. Admiration for an artist\'s technical mastery isn\'t quite love for me it must be more ...it is design, execution and concept and by concept I mean the ability to get under the skin of the material you are transcribing from words to pictures and making it live and resonate and have a certain depth and insight. As if the artist understood things only suggested by the author. It comes partly from a deep empathy and understanding of the material the one thing for all his virtuosity that represents Frank\'s Achilles heel.\"
The new sketchbook which is volume 3 in the RGK Sketchbook series following Cities and Scenes and Swordsmen and Saurians both of which have been out of print for many years will be titled Sirens and Sibyls and will be devoted to Roy\'s depiction of women embracing the period from 1934 to 1981. It should be of paramount interest to all fans of imaginative illustration. Roy was in many ways the father of contemporary heroic fantasy illustration inspiring such diverse artists as Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Michael Kaluta, Jeff Jones, Bernie Wrightson , Gary Gianni, Tom Yeats, Steve Hickmanand many others. The book will contain homages by Hickman and Yeats. 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of RGK\'s birth (1918-1983) and many events are being planned to celebrate it including several exhibitions. To coincide with the anniversary of Roy\'s birth the estate will be issuing facsimile reproductions of Land of Hidden Men and King Kull two of the artist\'s most famous covers for Burroughs and Howard, They will be limited to only 100 numbered copies.
