Royal Doulton FlambéSang de Bouefminiature vase - items in a true miniature sense like this are actually very scarce to find on the market today, the first we have seen in pure Sang De Bouef. Astute collectors will note the piece has been signed by Michael Doulton to base - however it is worth noting the vase was produced well before the modern era (I\'d say someone has taken it in to a collectors event for identification and explanation by Michael and he has signed it because I would date the piece as 1930s)

Excellent condition, free from damage and repair with a little fine clean crazing really on visible on magnification (there is a light scratch which is pictured)

Approx 8.5cm tallSang de boeuf, (in French meaning “oxblood”) also called flambé glaze, a glossy, rich, bloodred glaze often slashed with streaks of purple or turquoise used to decorate pottery, particularly porcelain. The effect is produced by a method of firing that incorporates copper, a method first discovered by the Chinese of the Ming dynasty, probably during the reign of Wanli (1573–1620). Examples of this older work are now extremely rare. The process was at first difficult to control, but it had been mastered by the time of Kanxi (1661–1722) and Qianlong (1736–96) in the Qing dynasty, and chuihong, or “blown red” glaze ware, became popular. The langyao porcelain of the Qing dynasty was imitated in Europe, especially in the porcelain factory at Sèvres, France, which produced a substantial amount of sang de boeuf in the late 19th century. The process was also used by individual craftspeople, notably the British potter Bernard Moore (1850–1935) - who shared his secrets with his brother Fred Moore, and in turn with the Royal Doulton company leading to the development of this glaze in the late 1920s.
