ROYAL DOULTON Scottish Highland Cattle Burslem England FLOW BLUE STEER PLATE Cow:
$160.00

This a stunning 10 7/8\" wide, flow blue and white transferware, Doulton Lambeth plate, featuring Scottish Highland Cattle in a rocky field. The decorative decorative border is composed of singing birds, flowers and decorative elements. It is artist signed \"S. Nelson, del.\" (del meaning Delineavit, drawn by). The cobalt blue coloration is beautiful against the white ground.

CONDITION:

It has some surface scratches, as you might expect from its 115 year age. Along the edge is a spot where the glaze is not covering the pottery. There is a raised rough spot that is not glazed in the logo. (Please see the photo.)

MAKER\'S MARK:The maker\'s mark on the reverse says DOULTON BURSLEM ENGLAND. This version of the Doulton mark was adapted from a similar Lambeth mark. It incorporated a device of four interlocking D\'s that was introduced c. 1882. After 1891 the word ENGLAND was added underneath. The mark continued in use until 1902. The coronet was probably added to the earlier mark c. 1886 to mark the appointment of Henry Doulton as \'Potter to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales\' (later King Edward VI 1). This mark continued in use until 1902. It appears to have been used especially on bone china products and on the more expensive earthen wares. A simplified version showing only the coronet on a flat base and the word DOULTON was also used.

MEASUREMENTS & WEIGHT: It it quite thick and heavy for its size: it weighs 1 3/4 lbs. It measures 10 7/8\" in diameter and has a pretty scalloped edge.
