HMS DUBLIN

HMS Dublinwas part of the Chathamsub-group of Town Class cruisers. She was launched on 9 November 1911 andcommissioned in March 1913.

She wasinitially assigned to the 1st Battle Squadron and then to the 1st Light Cruisersquadronin July 1913, operating in the Mediterranean.

Shepursuedthe German cruiser Goebenon 4 August 1914 just prior to the outbreak ofWWI. On 6 August after having completed coaling,DublinleftMaltato join Rear-Admiral Troubridge\'s squadron. At 2030 she received ordersto obtainGoeben‍ \'​s course and sink her during the night, bytorpedoes if possible. Observing at a distance, her Captain expected to engageat about 0330 butGoebenhad unexpectedly altered course tothe north. The chase was lost as a daylight attack would be suicidal;Goeben’slargest guns could accurately fire explosive shells up to 10 miles.

InFebruary 1915,Dublinwas sent to the Dardanellesandassisted HMSImplacable\'slanding assault on Gallipolion25 April 1915.While takingpart in a sweep off the Albanian coast,Dublinwas hit anddamaged by a torpedo from Austrian submarineon 9 June 1915.Dublinwasable to get underway at 17 knots and put into Brindisi but was out of actionfor several months and had to return to the UK for refit.

Dublinservedin the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadronwiththe Grand Fleet from 1916 to 1919. She participated in the Battle ofJutlandon 31 May 1916. During the subsequent night actions,Dublinfired117 6-inch shells and, along withSouthampton, attacked and sank adestroyer.Both ships, however, sustained severe damage. Three crewmembers were killed and 27 wounded whenDublinreceived five5.9 shell inch hits from the cruiser Elbingand eight 4.1-inchshell hits fromStuttgart.Subsequent repairs toDublinwere not completed until 17 June.

On 3May 1917 in the North Sea,Dublinwith the Australian cruiserHMAS Sydneyand four destroyers (Nepean,Obdurate,Pelican,Pylades),left Rosythfor a sweep between the mouths of the Forth and the Humber.The following dayDublinobserved the Zeppelin L43about17 miles away, rapidly approaching a strange vessel. Both cruisers promptlymade for the enemy, opening fire on it at extreme range.Dublinsaw the trackof a torpedo passing ahead of her. A submarine was spotted which fired twotorpedoes at her. She sighted another submarine, which she engaged with herguns and for the 6th squadron at the Africa Station from January 1920 until1924, though she served for a short time in April with the 3rd squadron in theMediterranean until being sent to the Reserve at Nore in 1924. She was sold forscrappingin July 1926
