DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION:

This is an original, antique magazine article from a 1881 issue of Scribner\'s Monthly. It is NOT the entire issue of the magazine. The article is 15 pages long and has 6 illustrations.
PLEASE NOTE : The first page is a photocopy. The remaining pages are all original 1881.

This article is part of series of 12 different articles about Peter the Great. I do have some other parts to that series, but not the whole thing. This particular article focuses on the years 1718-1721. Peter\'s northern armies took the Swedish province of Livonia (the northern half of modern Latvia, and the southern half of modern Estonia), driving the Swedes back into Finland. Most of Finland was occupied by the Russians. In 1716 and 1717, the Tsar revisited the Netherlands and continued his travel to the Austrian Netherlands and France. The Tsar\'s navy was so powerful that the Russians could penetrate Sweden. Peter also obtained the assistance of the Electorate of Hanover and the Kingdom of Prussia. Still, Charles XII of Sweden refused to yield. It was not until his death in battle in 1718 that peace with the Swedes become feasible. After the battle near Ă…land, Sweden made peace with all powers but Russia by 1720. In 1721, the Treaty of Nystad ended what became known as the Great Northern War. Russia acquired Ingria, Estonia, Livonia and a substantial portion of Karelia. In turn, Russia paid two million Riksdaler and surrendered most of Finland, retaining only some Finnish lands close to Saint Petersburg, gaining the Russians access to a warm-water-port for easier trading with the Western world. The article ends with the death of Peter the Great in 1725.

PETER I THE GREAT or Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov (Russian: 1672-1725), was the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias and the Duke of Estonia and Livonia. He ruled Russia and later the Russian Empire from 1682 until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his weak and sickly half-brother, Ivan V. Peter the Great carried out a policy of Westernization and expansion that transformed the Tsardom of Russia into the 3-billion acre Russian Empire, a major European power.

To find an article about this topic, in its\' original publication, 127 years old, NOT A REPRINT, is a very rare and exciting find! A MUST for any serious scholar, collector or enthusiast!
