The Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan made its apparition on 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khaganat recentlycaptured by the Russians. The iconography subject is closely associated with aGreek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By this Icon young people are blessedat the altar. The feasts were established on 22 October (5 November) and 8 (21)July.

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of themain and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, specialpriming). It was painted then with egg tempera and gold paints that use thesmall parts of leaf gold. Enamel paints were also used. They create a reliefornament. The style is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of theicon painting.

There are two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping.

Size = 10.4x9.1x0.8(26.5x23x2 cm). Weight = 698 gr.
