Saint EqualApostolic Duke Vladimir (955 – 1015) was the grandson of Saint Olga.

He became theDuke of Novgorodafter his father death in 970. He captured Kievand became ruler of Russiain 980.

Vladimir wasbaptized in 989 inorder to marry Anne, the Christian sister of the Byzantine emperor. Hisconversion marked the beginning of Christianity in Russia. Vladimir took his newreligion very seriously and sought to impose it by force on his people, not allof whom were willing to accept it. He reformed his own life (putting aside hisfive former wives), built schools and churches, destroyed idols, brought Greekand German missionaries to his realms and exchanged ambassadors with Rome. This modern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professionalchurch artist at the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and oldcenters of the Russian icon painting.

The icon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso,special priming). The margins were hand engraved. It was painted then with eggtempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. The style istraditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

There are twooriginal wooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from wrapping.

Size = 11x8.7x1.1 (28x22x2.8 cm). Weight = 1075 gr.
