Archangel Michael is depictedoverthrowing Satan from Heaven. The image of Michael as the Angel of the LastJudgment may be explained by the Bible endowing him with an apocalyptic mission(And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon;and the dragon fought and his angels. Rev. 12.7) and by his popularity amongthe peasant laity and in folk Russian culture. According to Orthodox Churchteachings, all the powers of Heaven will gather at the moment of the SecondComing of Christ and the Last Judgment: “when the Son of man shall come in Hisglory, and all the holy Angels with Him...” (Matt. 25:31).

The feastof the Counsel of Archstrateg Michael and other Bodiless Heavenly Powers is on8 (21) November. Another feast is on 6 (19) September.

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavlthat is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Thismodern icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board with theshrine i.e. the rectangular hollow at the middle part designed for the image.The margins are above the hollow. The shrines mostly belong to the antiqueicons from the 18 century and earlier. The board was covered with levkas(gesso, special priming) and painted with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

Theboard was hand made. It has well visible traces of hand craft at the back.

There were two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping. Both are lackingnow.

Spotsat the back are the wood borers’ holes. They are witnesses of age though seemto be free from any insects for a long time.

Size= 12.4x9.6x1.2 (31.5x29.5x3 cm). Weight = 1130 gr.
