The subject of the icon is based onthe Biblical story about the visit by three Angels to the Prophet Abraham andhis wife Sarah (Genesis, 18: 1- 8 and passim).

The feast day is on the Pentecost:the fiftieth day after the Easter.

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of themain and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, specialpriming). The margins were hand engraved. It was painted then with egg temperaand gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditionaland strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

There were two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping. Both are lackingnow.

Thereare antique original graffiti at the back. They refer to the customer, workshopand to the subject and type of the icon.

Size = 11.6x9.8x0.8 (29.5x25x2cm). Weight = 759 gr.
