The Holy Protection of theMost Holy Mother of God icon doesn\'t exist anywhere beyond Russia.

At the IX century Slavs(Kievan Vikings) invaded to the Byzantine Empire.Saint Andrew the Fool in Christ and his pupil Saint Epiphanies (at the rightside) had the vision of the Mother of God praying for Christians and protectingthem with the Pall. This event took place in VlachernTemple in Constantinople.Mother of God is shown spreading her veil overall the people in the church as a protection. She is standing on a cloud with the council of Saints. In themiddle stands Saint Roman the Sweet Singer who was the author of the firstAkathist to the Mother of God. There is Emperor Leo VI Philosopher at the leftside. The feast is on October 1 (14).

This modern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professionalchurch artist at the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and oldcenters of the Russian icon painting.

The icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board coveredwith levkas (gesso, special priming) with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

There is an originalwooden wedge at the back to prevent the board from wrapping.

Size = 14x11.6x0.8(35.5x29.5x2 cm). Weight = 1200 gr.
