The feast of the Nativity of theMother of God takes place on (8) 21 September. It is one the twelve main feastsand it is the first in the annual circle of the Russian Orthodox Churchholidays.

Saint Mary was born at Nazareth. Saint Joachimand Hanna were her parents. They had no children for a long time and prayed forbestowal them with at least a single child.

Parents of the Virgin were RighteousJoachim from the tribe of the King and Prophet David, and Anna from the tribeof the First-Priest Aaron. The couple was without child, since Saint Anna wasbarren. Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did not lose hope on the mercyof God. They made a vow to dedicate the child which the Lord might bestow onthem, into the service of God in the Temple.

The Lord fulfilled their petitionsand the Archangel Gabriel brought Joachim and Anna the joyous message: theirprayers were heard by God, and of them would be born a Most Blessed DaughterMary, through who would come the Salvation of all the World.

At the age of three Virgin was ledto Jerusalem Temple together with Hebrew maids whoheld the candles in order to show the Virgin her way. High Priest Zachariah mether and led to the third step as it’s shown in the icon. The Virgin stayed inthe Temple fortwelve years until her age of consent and Angel fed her all this time. Thefeast is on 21 November (4 December).

Thismodern Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow)that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Thismodern icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board with theshrine i.e. the rectangular hollow at the middle part designed for the image.The margins are above the hollow. The shrines mostly belong to the antiqueicons from the 18 century and earlier. The board was covered with levkas(gesso, special priming) and painted with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

There were two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping. Both are lackingnow.

Size = 14.2x12x1.2(36x30.5x3 cm). Weight = 1460 gr.
