The subject of the icon isbased on the Biblical story about the visit by three Angels to the ProphetAbraham and his wife Sarah (Genesis, 18: 1- 8 and passim).

The feast day is on thePentecost: the fiftieth day after the Easter.

There are images of the fourApostles in the corners. They are (from the top left clockwise): Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Andrew,Saint Luke.

This modern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professionalchurch artist at the Russian town Yaroslavl (notfar from Moscow)that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

The icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board coveredwith levkas (gesso, special priming) with egg tempera and gold paints that usethe small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly followsantique canons of the icon painting.

The icon is of so called \"lectern\" size that it suitable for achurch as well as for a private house.

There are twooriginal wooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from wrapping.

Size = 19.5x15.4x1 (49.5x39x2.6 cm). Weight = 2295 gr.
