A rare, and superb 153 years old Victorian riding crop / whip with attractive sterling silver mounts. The handle is made from Baleen whale bristles, the remainder of the whip being made from fine braided gut and finished with a leather tip. The silver handle on the whip is engraved with the maker's mark "Ellam Maker London".
This is the mark of Benjamin Ellam : Saddler, Harness & Whip Manufacturer, 213 Piccadilly, London. Manufacturer to the Courts of France, Russia, Spain, Italy, and Austria. Winner of prestigious Medal Awards for his workmanship and design, Paris 1855, London 1862, etc. (see below image of his 1860's promotional advertisement)
He was also the owner of the horse 'Tormentor' the 1866 year winner of the famous English horse race, The Epsom Oaks.
All parts of the riding crop are in exceptionally fine original condition with very little signs of use. The sterling silver mounts are both stamped with full Victorian, English sterling silver assay hallmarks for the year 1859 - 24" inches (60cm)
