Being offered at sale is a rare 1st edition workof Catholic ecclesiastical history and devotion dealing with the doctrine ofthe veneration and worship of the Virgin Mary.Abbe Edouard Orsini (1801 -1875), the author, was an ardent defender ofthis devotion. The book was issued notonly as a “history” and “help to devotion,” but as a stalwart defense of PopePius IXth’s recent pronouncements regarding the doctrine of the immaculateconception. At points the book seems tobe an apologetic. Much of Orsini’sdefenses are drawn from old traditions, sighted in abundance, along withquotations from church fathers and Catholic ecclesiastical writers down throughthe ages. Equally interesting is the stridentanti-Protestant take Orsini holds.Numerous defenses are leveled against Protestant arguments not only theMarian doctrine, but against their views of the Catholic church itself. Of particular interest in this area are thejustifications Orsini proposes for such historical events as the St. BartholomewDay Massacre and other repressive dealings with heretics. In places Orsini writes apologeticallyconcerning the brutal suppression of South American Indians by theconquistadors, demonstrating an abhorrence to their cruelty while at the sametime lauding the methods and manners of indoctrinating the Indians thus winningthem over to the church and to the veneration of Mary.

Orsini’s work is a valuable contribution to Catholicdevotional and ecclesiastical literature, and a significant resource work forthose studying the evolution of the doctrines, practices, traditions, etc thatsurround the church’s teachings on Mariology. One might say that the work is a Catholic apology on the subject and adefense of Pope Pius IXth’s elevation of the doctrine of the immaculateconception. Orsini’s interpretations of history are always quite interesting, and quite representative of the Church’s world view as still held in the 19thcentury.

Orsini deals largely with traditions, apparitions, historiesand devotion to statues of Mary, apparitions, miracles etc. Materials are drawn from “Traditions of theEast and the writings of church fathers.” Included in this work are the following:

  1. “The Life of the blessed Virgin, Mother of God.” – 18 chapters
  2. “The History of the Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.” 15 chapters.

  7. Dedicatory page “To His Holiness Pius IX., P.P. This work, not from any merit of its own, but because all books about the Blessed Virgin naturally seek the protection of him who dogmatically defined her Immaculate Concption is, with profound love and reverence inscribed by his unknown and unworthy son and servant, the writer.”
