Rare 1861 Missouri Civil War Appointment Signed by Governor & General, Nice:
$1500.00

Here is a rare item. An American Civil War period appointment made and signed by the governor of Missouri, Hamilton Rowan Gamble (November 29, 1798 – January 31, 1864), who was appointed as the Governor of Missouri by a Constitutional Convention after Union forces captured the state capital at Jefferson City and deposed the elected governor. It is countersigned by General Chester Harding Junior (October 16, 1827 -February 10, 1875), a Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General who served in the Civil War first as a Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General on the Staff of Brig. General Nathaniel Lyon, then as Colonel and commander of three successive regiments - the 10th, 25th and 43rd Missouri Volunteer Infantries. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on May 27, 1865 for \"faithful and meritorious services during the war.\" He was the son of noted artist Chester Harding. The appointment is dated 28 December 1861 not long after Gamble assumed office and not long after the war started. The appointmentwas made for Raymond Edward Wiswell (1827 - 1903), who was created as a Lieutenant in the 9th Regimentof the Missouri Volunteers. Wiswell was born in Vermont in 1827 and moved west where he joined up in Missouri and after the war settled in Shellmound, Tennessee and died in Alabama. The documentalso bears the raisedseal of Missouri. Condition is ok, with some tearing at the perimeterof the fold marks, and the document has a darkened overall appearance. Two central ink stains, some staining wear the document is tacked down. It is tacked down in a couple of places (looks like 4), but is not totally glued down to the backing board. The document measures without its frame just shy of 14 x 17 inches. A very rare item, I could not find any other examples available beyond the Missouri State Archives. Buyer to pay shipping, good luck!
