The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant by General Grant, himself

This is a Rare and exquisite 1st edition book volume 1, The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York. Charles L Webster & Co., printed 1885-1886. This autobiography was completed just before Grant\'s death from cancer in 1885. Encouraged by Mark Twain to publish, Grant wrote his memoirs to be sold and to leave a financial legacy to his family after he was swindled out of all his money the previous year. One of the most recognized figures in American military history. According to Eicher, \"Grant\'s memoirs comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history.\"

This is a rare publisher\'s 1st edition in full morocco leather. The leather covers have raised bands, engraved borders on fronts and backs and circular blind-stamped medallions on fronts and backs. The pages are gilt-edged on 3 sides and the books are illustrated with numerous steel engravings, facsimiles, and maps.

This copy is in better condition overall than most I\'ve seen.

This book is in very good condition for its age. The leather cover remains attractive with some wear at the spines, outer hinges, and corners as shown. There are marbled end papers with gilt embossed edges to the end papers. The bindings are very strong with all pages, maps, and tissue attached. The pages are in outstanding condition with only slight yellowing and very little wear. The protective paper in the beginning of the book has been ripped out On this same page, the owner of the book signed his name and date with flourish, Henry Graham, Dec 25 1886. There are no dog ears and no extraneous writing.

The map is unfortunately ripped in half but it is all there. (See photos)

The book is 9 inches by 6 1/2 inches for a weight of about 3 pounds.

Happy offerding!
