Condition: Unbound with blue paper covers. Edges are considerably frayed (see the photos) but this does not affect the plates at all, since margins are wide. Scattered light foxing (again see photos). Slight waves to the plates from storage but no creases. Overall the plates are in excellent condition, suitable for display or framing.Information:A unique and rare collection of47 lovely large engraved plates, published as the first volume of what were to be regular reports of what was then arelatively newobservatory.Includes elevations of the buildings, a site plan, details of the architecture, and engravings of the various telescopes, transits, and circles along with details of their mechanical construction. Plates 1 and 2 cover the site plan and a general overview of the buildings; Plates 3-17 cover the Large Equatorial refracting telescope--showing the building, dome, mounting, details of the circles and the movable ladder; Plates 18-21 cover the same architecture, instrument, and details of the small equatorial refractor. Plate 22 show the declination mounts for both equatorial; Plates 23-32 cover the Equatorial Coude telescope, an unusual right-angled design; Plate 33-37 cover the large meridan circle and building; Plate 38 covers the small meridian circle; plate 39 covers the Gautier meridian (3 views); plates 40-43 show the Physics and Magnetic pavilions; Plate 44 shows a support building; Plate 45 shows some electrical machines; and plate 46 and 47 are plates of the auxiliary observatory on Mont Mounier, along with its equatorial refractor.A highly desirable to any serious collection of astronomical publications, scientific illustrations, and optical devices.
Biographical Note: Henri Joseph Anastase Perrotin (1845 – 1904) was a French astronomer. In his early career, he and Guillaume Bigourdan were assistants of Félix Tisserand at Toulouse Observatory. Later, he was the director of the Nice Observatory in Nice, France from 1884 until his death. He made observations of Mars and attempted to determine the rotation period of Venus. He also calculated perturbations in the orbit of 4 Vesta. His asteroid discoveries are credited by the Minor Planet Center to \"J. Perrotin\". He won the Prix Lalande in 1875 and 1883.[1] Perrotin crater on Mars has been named in his honor, as has asteroid 1515 Perrotin.Shipping: Free priority rate shipping in US well protected in a cardboard shipping box.
