Serious Best Offers Considered

This is an EXTREMELY RARE, Circa 1905, SOLID Sterling Silver, COMPOTE? with HANDLES that was made by GOODNOW & JENKS out of BOSTON, MA. G&J was in business from 1893 to 1905 and served the ELITE of Boston which means HIGH QUALITY work and UNIQUE / low volume production. I have researched this item from time to time for SEVERAL YEARS and STILL haven\'t seen anything like it ANYWHERE, so finally decided to just list it.If you happen to know the technical name for this shape and/or what it would be used for PLEASE let me know. This two handled compote has a bowl that is about 1 1/4\" deep in middle, bowl is 6\" across or 7 3/4\" from handle to handle, compote is 3 3/4\" to top of bowl or 4 3/8\" to top of handles, and base of compote is 3 1/2\" across. As you can see in the last photo, this SOLID sterling, UNweighted compote weighs ~225 grams or ~7.25 troy ounces. Bottom has 3 stamps near edge, each at a 90 degree angle from previous stamp. First stamp says \"430\" which would be the pattern number. Second stamp says \"Sterling\" and third stamp says: G (turtle symbol) J is missing (NOT badly stamped / removed). This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to any holloware, sterling, silver, compote, serving collection or a wonderful gift for someone very special.

\"G (turtle symbol) J\" is the silver mark for Goodnow & Jenks and after much research I believe I have discovered why the J is missing from my piece. The \"J\" stands for \"Barton P Jenks\" who was the son of \"Lewis E Jenks\" that was part of the well known Kennard & Jenks out of Boston that was absorbed into Gorham in 1880. The \"G\" stands for Walter P Goodnow. From what I have read over the years Goodnow was the business man / financier of the company, while Jenks was the actual silversmith. In 1905 Jenks apparently LEFT the Goodnow & Jenks company to become the President & General Manager of William B Durgin Co out of Concord, NH [which was absorbed into Gorham later that same year 1905]. As a result the most logical conclusion is that this item was manufactured during the small window of time between when Jenks LEFT G&J and when Goodnow CLOSED the company [probably after fulfilling the company\'s outstanding orders]. Lastly for what it is worth, over the years I also have seen a couple other pieces with the same mark G (turtle symbol & missing J) which would tend to support my theory about Goodnow fulling outstanding orders & than closing the company after Jenks left.

I also have listed a RARE Sterling Silver GOODNOW & JENKS LID or COVER for an inkwell, tea / coffee set, or glass /cosmeticjar!!!
