Thismedal is the eighthof 17 in a series produced by The US Mint.The production of these medals began in 1922 with Warren Harding andended with Harry Truman in 1948. I willbe listing 13 of the 17 medals for sale.The medal being offered here is 33.8 mm or 1 ¼ inches in diameter. The medalobverse was engraved by John Ray Sinnock and is similar to the smallPresidential Inaugural but the reverse has the front view of the US MINTbuilding in Philadelphia and the surrounding legend: MINT OF THE UNITED STATES*PHILADELPHIA. The date 1931 is abovethe word PHILADELPHIA. The medal is in almost uncirculatedcondition with the slightest rub on the high points on the obverse andreverse. I have added a photo showingthe dated and undated reverse versions. You are offerding on the datedversion.

Thegenesis of this series began with a suggestion by Farran Zerbe in 1909 that a small medal be struckto commemorate visits to the Philadelphia Mint.Nothing was donewith that idea until 1922 when the first medal in this series wasstruck. It and subsequent issues, weresold at the mint for 25 cents. ErnieKeusch has identified 17different medals in the series.It has become a favorite of some Assay Medal collectors because all of the obversesand the reverses are reductions of portraits and devices previously used invarious Assay Commission medals. Thesemedals should be distinguished from miniatures of the regular PresidentialSeries medals which exactly replicate obverse and reverse of their largercounterparts. These small size medals rangein size from 33.2 mm (Truman) to 33.8 mm (Harding). The Presidential medals being offered areconsiderably rarerthan the regular US Mint Presidential medals and are not seen very often on.
