Rare 1938 Limited Edition Royal Doulton Sweet and Fair Art Deco Figurine HN1865:
$2000.00

From my aunt\'s estate, this Royal Doulton figurine, \'Sweet and Fair\', features an Art Deco style green gowned woman seated on chair holding a book - with perfect posture, I might add!A limited edition designed by Harradine, HN1865 was introduced 1938 and retired in 1949. From 1928 to 1954, a small number was placed on Doulton items - this number, added to the year 1927, denotes the actual year of manufacture any particular piece - this graceful figurine displays an \'11\' on her base, specifically dating her to 1938, the year of her premier.Although featured on their website in their Showcase Collection, she is no longer available through Royal Doulton nor through Replacements, Inc. or any other venue I could find.

Although Royal Doulton had produced figures from the mid-19th century, production did not really take off until 1913 under modeler C. J. Noke, when the HN (for Harry Nixon, head of figurine painting department) model numbering system was introduced. HN numbers were chronological until 1940.

Production mushroomed under the guidance of Noke and Leslie Harradine, who started as an apprentice at Doulton\'s Lambeth factory in London in 1902. Born Arthur Leslie Harradine (1887-1965), he was one of Royal Doulton’s premier modelers. A supremely talented ceramic artist and potter, Harradine produced exquisite figures from 1920 until the mid 1950s.

Approximately 7½\" tall x 4¾\" wide, she is in amazing condition and I find no breaks, cracks, crazing or evidence of previous repairs although there are shelf scuffs on her base - see photo. To my eyes, she is absolutely perfect however sold as-is and found, if there were any defects, they would be documented in the photos which constitute a large portion of any item\'s description - please study them to make your own assessment.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I was moving stuff around in the display cabinet today and saw what I thought was a chip on the front leg of the chaise Sweet & Fair is sitting in -- I almost had a heart attack! Instead, I calmly (okay, so maybe not so calm) got out the magnifying glass and it turns out it\'s not a chip - as you can see from the last just added close up photo, the glaze completely covers the piece all the way down to the very tip of the front leg so it is just the way she was painted before she was glazed and fired. Is it a boo-boo or is that simply the way Harradine designed her? We\'ll never know. Just don\'t want anyone else to freak out like I did.
