Rare 20” ANRI Walter Bacher Italian Wood Carving Nativity Holy Family & Sheep

OutstandingANRI brand wood carvings from the Walter Bacher (1908-1960, bio below) nativityset of figures. Exact age not known, but believed to be 1950s vintage based onthe green/gold foil sticker on Joseph, used from 1954-1967 (Bacher died in1960). Buyers should rely on their own knowledge and research indetermining maker, age, region of origin, etc.

Incredible, very large scale hand carved figurines, each beautifullyrendered in 360º from maple (?) wood. The detailing on these is so impressive…veryhigh quality and classic ANRI. All have a wonderful gestural quality, broughtto life with the traditional, subtle color washes. This offering includes seven(7) pieces: Jesus, Mary, Joseph, 2 grazing sheep, 2 looking sheep. No manger.

Joseph: Measuresabout 19.75” tall (50.165cm). In overall great condition with minor handlingwear, foot wear, some vintage dust. No chips, cracks, repairs. Artist (carver) initialedat low back edge: H. Sch. Retains 2 ANRI labels to foot, undated.

Mary: Measuresabout 17” tall (43.18cm). In overall great condition with minor handling wear,foot wear, some vintage dust. No chips, cracks, repairs. Artist (carver) initialedat low back edge: LK. Retains 1 ANRI label to foot, undated.

Jesus: Measuresabout 7” long. Minor wear, right hand re-glued. Unmarked, undated.

Sheep: Non-grazingsheep measure about 8”x 5.5”. Great condition, nil wear. No chips, cracks,repairs. Unmarked, undated.

Bacherbio from the Cecconi site:Born on September 19th, 1908 in Vahrn near Brixen ( SouthTyrol), Walter Bacher apprenticed the well-known sculptor Alexander Dejaco inBrixen, to whom – he said – he owned much of his professional knowledge.

In 1931 he moved to Munichand attended two years of art school and four additional years at the Academyof Art. In 1937 he returned to Brixen and worked as an independent sculptor.

Called up during WWII, hewas taken prisoner by the Russians in 1943, and after five long years inPrisoner Of War Camp in Tula ( Russia ) he was able to return home. On December9, 1950 he married his former Masters’ daughter, Luise Dejaco and settled inInnsbruck ( Austria ) where he lived for the following ten years.

He died on November 24th, 1960 of a persistent illnesscontracted during his captivity. Most of his works were created during theselast years.
