An ancient south-east European Bronze Age vase, dating to around 2000 – 1100 BC.
This heavy vessel sits upon a rounded base, the piriform body rising to an everted rim, the shoulders decorated with two parallel bands bordering a series of incised triangle motifs. The body has an attractive black burnish, complemented by areas of light orange tinge.
Ceramic art rarely survives from the European Bronze Age, yet here we have a complete example, undamaged and appearing much as it would have done thousands of years ago. It has a wonderfully decorative, rustic quality, yet to those who made it this was not simply a piece of art. Rather, vessels such as this played a part in the ritual practices that appear to have been crucial to many Bronze Age societies at the time.
Please note that whilst artefacts of this type are often forged, this is an undoubtedly genuine example, showing all the correct signs of a Bronze Age ceramic.
