A very rareNear Easterngreen faience dish, dating to approximately 200 B.C.

Decorated with incised and painted geometric motif. The dish would probably have served a votive function in antiquity - being gifted to a god in exchange for a favor. An extremely rare type. Made from the sand of the desert but possessing the allure of gold, faience was considered by the ancients to be a material imbued with strong magic. It is little wonder then that the ancients chose tocreate their most treasured possessionsin this beautiful, enchanted substance.

Diameter: 4 5/8 inches.

Condition: Excellent condition. A few small segments reattached around the edges.

Provenance: Ex. Collection of His Excellency the late C. Perrone Capano, acquired 1960\'s. Capano was a well respected Italian diplomat who served as Consul in Washington and later as Ambassador in the Near East. It was in the Near East that Capano developed his love of antiquities, acquiring a magnificent collection in the Early to late 1960\'s.
