1873 Hallet & Davis Upright Grand Piano - Rococo Victorian style
Up for sale is this incredibly rare and absolutely breathtaking Hallet & Davis piano from 1873 (serial #21033).For its age, it\'s in absolutely fantastic condition although it will need a lot of TLC. There exist the usual scrapes and scratches from years of use.As far as I can tell, there exists no major cracks or defects that render the piano unplayable. This piano was definitely well loved and used for its intended purpose. A few of the trim pieces are gone but these are easily replaceable if you are good with word-working.
I\'ve been told all of the action parts, strings, felts, hammers, sound board, etc... are original to 1873. To my knowledge, nothing has been changed or added.
The piano is in playable condition although it will need a good tuning.Antique Piano Shop (antiquepianoshop.com)I have contacted the Antique Piano Shop (a premiere restoration piano company)about this piano and the following is what they had to say about it
\"We have restored several antique Hallet & Davis upright pianos over the years, and they are consistently some of the finest pianos we see come through our shop.\"
\"Your piano was the highest-grade, most elaborate upright piano in the Hallet & Davis line – it is definitely very special. The piano is done in a black lacquer finish with inset exotic burl wood panels and gold accented pin-striping and is of the carved Rococo Victorian style. The piano appears to be in original, unrestored condition with the old worn felts and strings still present. The average piano has about a 50-year life span before the felts, leather and strings deteriorate and need restoration. The fact your piano is in such good condition at this age is a real testament to the quality that went into building it! The piano is an “upright grand” and would have the sound of a full grand piano if it were professionally restored\"
\"If you look at the soundboard in your piano, you will see that the grain in the wood is very close together. When that tree was growing 200 years ago, America\'s forests were very dense and trees had to struggle to grow. As a result, the wood rings are very close together due to slower growth. This wood with tight rings is more resonate and has much better tone quality than new pianos. Unfortunately, most of this quality wood is gone forever. New pianos with green wood do not have the same sound because they are not as deep and resonate in tone quality. As these pianos are destroyed, this wonderful wood is lost forever. Luckily, people are beginning to realize the quality of these vintage instruments and they are investing in their restoration and preservation for future generations to enjoy.\"
Antique Piano Shop, as well as Lindelblad Pianos of New Jersey, has confirmed that if this piano were restored it would be valued around $28,000 - $30,000.
The only other place that I\'ve seen this \'specific\' piano has been in a museum.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ask me any and all questions!!!This piano absolutely needs to have a home where it can be cherished and loved the way it needs to be.
