I am downsizing and selling much of my newspaper collection. I have collected books, magazines, and newspapers for as long as I can remember. I\'ve kept everything in boxes in closets in a non-smoking home for years now, so they have been well cared for since purchase. ✯This is an sale for a section (Part 1 - Pages 1 to 8) of:THE ILLUSTRATED BUFFALO EXPRESS
from BUFFALO, N.Y.
dated SEPTEMBER 15, 1894There is a chapter from \"The Heart of the World\" by H. Rider Haggard.
There are wonderful illustrated ads for crown & bridge work \"teeth without plates\"; a Turko-Russian Bath Cabinet; Deformity Braces; and many other items.
There is a full page with illustrations on the \"Hop Culture in Central New-York\".
There is a full page with illustrations on Canada\'s West Point - The Royal Military College at Kingston.
In particular, there is an amazing ad (very small, measuring just 2 1/4\" x 3\") saying that \"Electric Power will double the population of Buffalo (via) Niagara Falls\".
BUT...what drew me to the newspaper all those years ago was the amazing cover illustration: \"Tickled to Death\" (copyrighted 1894 by Geo. E. Matthews & Co.) reproduced for The Illustrated Express from an enlargement of the original photograph by Clarence B. Moore, Philadelphia.
(\"The original picture, which appeared in The Illustrated Express of December 20, 1891, was apparently the most popular picture The Express has ever published. The demand for it has been and continues so great that it is hoped its reissue in enlarged form will prove acceptable to our readers. A limited number of copies on plate paper have been printed and will be sent to any address, in tubes, postage prepaid, on receipt of 50 cents.\")
This image is wonderful. I have looked online, and have only found a small reproduction of the photograph used for sheet music. On the newspaper cover, which measures 17 1/4\" x 23\" when flat, with the image taking up 10 1/2\" x 13 3/4\" in the center, it would look incredible framed. I have not framed it myself, and don\'t want to see it further damaged, so hope it will find a home on a wall somewhere, professionally presented, and treasured as it should be.
As you can see in the photos, there is chipping and wear to the fold which damaged the illustration. There is edgewear chipping; there are a few short tears; staining to the top/bottom; and general wear/age-toning to the entire paper. If you zoom in on the pictures, you should be able to get a pretty good idea as to condition. I took the photos with my iPad...and a desk lamp...so can add more photos with natural light if need be.
Please email any questions.
I\'m going to start the offerding at a relatively high offer...as I can\'t find another one of these online. It could be worth quite a bit more...but I have no way of knowing how to value it. This is actually a newspaper steel engraving after the famed photograph, but what I like best is that it is in the center front of a dated newspaper, so a piece of art, within its historical setting. Hopefully someone will appreciate it as I have.
The newspaper will be packaged securely in an archival sleeve and shipped with care.
THANKS FOR LOOKING!
